Therese Apel

Therese Apel is the breaking news and crime reporter for the Clarion Ledger, Mississippi's statewide newspaper and digital media organization and a part of the USA TODAY Network. Apel joined the Clarion Ledger in 2010 and focuses on crime and disaster coverage.

Apel has gained national publicity with multiple cases she has covered, most recently when Cory Godbolt, who was accused of killing eight people in a shooting spree in Brookhaven, confessed to her on camera from the scene of his arrest. In early March, she was named 2017 Best of USA TODAY Network in the Breaking News category for her coverage of the spree, the victims, and the fallout.

The Jessica Chambers case has also been a large part of the last three and a half years, as Apel and the Clarion Ledger led the coverage of the teen’s burning death in December 2014, delving into many of the previously untold stories of the case.

She has also focused long-term research and reporting on the unknown extent and impact of gang activity in Mississippi. Other recent high-profile cases Apel has covered include the Kingston Frazier murder case and the Alex Deaton multi-state crime spree case.

Apel, a former volunteer firefighter and first responder, is a graduate of the University of Mississippi with a degree in broadcast journalism and criminal justice. She has won various other awards locally and through the Mississippi Press Association, the Associated Press, and the USA TODAY Network.
